Crystal Palace will likely face issues with Squad Cost Ratio (SCR), but the result will not be as serious as many fear at Selhurst Park. That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Palace's Europa League journey should help balance the books next season.
What happened?
A growing number of supporters have raised alarm bells over the Eagles' finances ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, especially with European football secured. Having qualified for the Europa League via the Europa Conference League, SCR remains a huge talking point in South London, at least for the fans.
Why it matters for Crystal Palace
Despite the profit on Maxence Lacroix's move to Chelsea, Palace splashed the cash on Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen in the winter window. Add to that the high earners of Daichi Kamada and Dean Henderson, and it is easy to see why so many are concerned about future repercussions for Pierre Sage's side.
What comes next?
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained why SCR could be a problem for Palace, but also why he doesn't fear any major punishments. "They are going to have a problem on SCR largely because they're in Europe. On SCR they're capped at 70 per cent," he said.
Crystal Palace is currently 15th in the Premier League, with 45 points from 38 games, and 11 wins, 12 draws, and 15 losses. They have scored 41 goals and conceded 51, with a goal difference of -10. They are 40 points behind leaders Arsenal and have lost their last two games.
The club is also in a battle to agree a takeover, with US billionaires reportedly convinced it's a good time to sell. However, the uncertainty surrounding the takeover has thrown doubt over Steve Parish's role at Selhurst Park, but only in the event of a full sale.
Borson believes that Palace can do well in the Europa League and generate €40million, plus gate receipts, if they were to win it or go deep. This would help balance the books and alleviate some of the financial concerns surrounding the club.
